Our mouth guards help to improve overall performance whilst protecting your teeth. The device has been designed using years of research and is a highly effective protective appliance.

How does the Sports Guard work?

At Smile Hub Dental Clinic our mouth guards are designed to protect your teeth from injury. They are modified to fit your bite for optimal protection. Our mouth guards re-align the muscles in the face and jaw helping to improve sport performance by optimising our patients muscular positioning. The mouth guard utilises a digital image of the patient’s jaw to produce precise measurements. The sports guard improves performance by automatically aligning the jaw joint into it’s optimum position. This enhances flexibility, improves muscle contraction and releases the muscles tension. The mouth guard helps alleviate tension around the jaw joint and the muscles have a greater capacity for contraction. At Smile Hub Dental Clinic our team of dental experts understand that traditional mouthguards can be uncomfortable and awkward to wear which can impact sport performance. Our Sports guards are bespoke, meaning that they fit the contours of your mouth exactly to provide you with a protective and safe device which is comfortable to wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful to have a mouthguard fitted?

Having a mouthguard fitted at Smile Hub Dental Clinic involves coming for two appointments. In the first appointment the dentist will take an impression of your teeth using putty like material to customise your mouthguard to the exact shape of your teeth. This impression will then be sent to a lab where the impression will be turned into your personalised mouthguard. In the second appointment our dentist will have you try in the finished mouthguard to ensure it fits perfectly and comfortably. The above process is very quick and involves little to no pain or discomfort.

How do I care for my mouthguards?

  • Run under cold water after every use
  • Keep it in a rigid plastic container to prevent any damage
  • Keep your mouthguard out of direct sunlight as it will change shape in high temperatures
  • You can rinse your mouthguard in a mouthwash from time to time
  • Have your dentist asses your mouthguard at check ups to make sure it is not damaged
  • Do not chew the mouthguard

How often should you change mouthguards?

Here at Smile Hub Dental Clinic, we recommend that a patient should replace their mouth guard every six months or after every sports season. Research shows that mouthguards can weaken and become thinner which can lead to them being less effective. The more wear on the mouthguard means that the protective material cannot absorb as much external impact and the teeth won’t have as much protection from injury.

Why are mouth guards worn on top teeth?

Mouthguards are usually made for the top teeth as they are the teeth more likely to be affected during any impact. They will also protect your tissues, tongue, lips and the lining of the cheeks. The top teeth will take the impact of the trauma because they stick out in front of the bottom teeth which is why a top teeth mouthguard is important.
