Paediatric Dentistry

Our team at Smile Hub Dental Clinic provides a wide range of specialised services, including paediatric dentistry.

Our paediatric team provides compassionate, child-centered, high-quality dental care in a fun and welcoming environment where patients and their parents can feel safe and at ease. We strive to build a trusting and confident relationship with you and your child that will serve as the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

What exactly is a Paediatric Dentist?

A Paediatric dentist is a dental specialist who works with children. They devote their careers to the care of children and people with special needs. They are qualified dentists who have completed three years of additional training in Paediatric Dentistry.
This training equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to provide the highest quality dental care to children from infancy to adolescence. Paediatric dentists are specially trained in advanced treatment techniques and child behavior management to treat anxious children, children with special health needs, and to ensure that every child has a positive and enjoyable dental experience.

Examination

The initial comprehensive examination includes a thorough review of pertinent medical and dietary history, as well as any history of dental trauma. This examination may include radiographs (x-rays) and intraoral photographs.

Preventive Medicine

We promote good oral hygiene and work closely with our patients and their families to establish effective, enjoyable, and personalised home dental care habits. We also provide excellent product advice, technique modifications, and maintenance schedules.

Restorations

Sometimes a restoration is required in addition to ongoing preventive care and advice. Fillings, crowns, and pulp treatments are among the restorative options. Each restoration’s safety, strength, and longevity are our top priorities.

Emergencies

Children will be children! That comes with bumps and bruises, so if your child’s mouth is swollen, in pain, or a tooth has been chipped, bumped, or knocked out, call our team right away and they will give you further instructions. If an appointment with our dentists is required, we will do everything possible to see your child as soon as possible.

Sedation with Consciousness

In our paediatric rooms at Smile Hub Dental Clinic, we offer nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation (happy gas) sedation, which is a safe way of reducing pain and anxiety during dental treatment. Your child will remain aware of what is going on around them, but will feel more relaxed, comfortable, and floaty, allowing treatment to proceed as usual.

Anaesthesia in general

When a child is very young, very fearful, requires a large amount of dental treatment, or has special health care needs or circumstances that will not allow them to tolerate multiple visits of treatment performed in the chair, general anaesthesia is usually required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Sedation Dentistry feel like?

You will remain conscious and able to talk during your dental sedation in Smile Hub Dental Clinic. You will be able to understand and respond to our dental team. Intravenous sedation induces a state of deep relaxiation and you will be very comfortable throughout your dental treatment. The drugs used for sedation can cause partial or complete memory loss for the period of time that the drug is working until it wears off. You will feel that time passes quickly and you will not recall much about your dental treatment. You may in fact feel that you were ‘asleep’ during the procedure even though you weren’t.

Call us in Smile Hub Dental Clinic in North Dublin today or Book Online Now to arrange your nervous dental patient conscious sedation consultation.

Is local anaesthetic still needed?

Yes the drugs used for intravenous sedation are anti-anxiety drugs that relax you but you will still need to be numbed for your treatment. However, you will not be numbed until the intravenous sedation has taken effect. If you have a phobia of needles you will be really relaxed before the local anaesthetic injection is administered.

How is Sedation administered?

Intravenous sedation is administered into your vein. A thin needle is placed in your vein close to the skin in your arm or in the back of the hand. During the procedure your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen levels will be closely monitored. A typical sedation appointment ususally lasts 90 minutes.

What drug is used for my sedation dentistry?

At Smile Hub Dental Clinic in Bayside Medical Centre we use a benzodiazepine called midazolam.
